BIO

My name is John, I am the artist behind Primary Nature. I am an Irish designer, illustrator and artist.

Inspiration

My biggest source of inspiration comes from the world around me. I tune into the nature I find wherever I go and take moments to observe the textures, patterns, colours, shapes and energy that is to be found all around us. From the macro to the micro, Mother Nature is the greatest artist there is and I find her to be an endless well of ideas and imagination. Through my work as a digital artist I aim to create a bridge between the natural world and the digital realm and seek to visualize the beauty of nature, as I interpret it, for all my viewers to see. I use this process as a type of meditation, from the exploring and capturing through photography, to the creative process on my computer of placing and cutting and manipulating each of the natural assets I have found. Each step in this is a learning process for me as I continue to find new ways of approaching my work and fresh ways to express my love of Nature. She has a lifetime of artistry within her and I am on the path of discovering this.

Process

Everything starts in the outdoors. I take photographs wherever I go of whatever catches my eye. Leaves and flowers are my favourite subjects to work from and I will capture textures and forms and any other source material that I think might come in useful at some stage in the future.

For the digital side of things I work mainly in Photoshop and Illustrator but I can often be found in After Effects also for any number of reasons. I am well versed in InDesign as well but that is mostly for other design jobs that pop up from time to time. I enjoy producing my own audio for any animated work I make and my DAW of choice is Propellerhead Reason. I love the way it looks and is designed and this is still an ongoing work in progress as I get more up to speed on audio production. I use it as a nice break from visual work and it gives me an outlet for my love of music.
